Understanding the Difference
When it comes to high-performance flooring, two names come up again and again: epoxy and polyaspartic. Both are durable, seamless coatings that bond directly to concrete. But they have very different strengths depending on your project.
Comparison Table
| Feature | Epoxy | Polyaspartic |
|---|---|---|
| Cure time | 24-72 hours | 1-4 hours |
| UV resistance | Amber/yellow in sunlight | UV stable — won't yellow |
| Thickness | 2-10mm (buildable) | 0.5-2mm |
| Odour | Moderate | Low |
| Impact resistance | Excellent (thicker builds) | Very good |
When to Choose Epoxy
Epoxy is best for projects where you want maximum build thickness and impact resistance. It’s ideal for garages, warehouses, commercial kitchens and industrial floors where heavy loads and chemical resistance matter most.
When to Choose Polyaspartic
Polyaspartic is perfect when time is critical. A garage can be coated and driven on the same day. It’s also better for outdoor areas and sun-exposed floors because it doesn’t yellow. We often recommend polyaspartic for car showrooms, outdoor entertaining areas and retail floors where UV stability matters.
What About Flake Systems?
Both epoxy and polyaspartic can be used with decorative flake broadcasts. At Epoxy Floors Sydney, we use All Purpose Coatings for both systems. The choice depends on your specific needs.
Which One Do We Recommend?
There’s no single “best” — it depends on your project. For most Sydney garage floors, we recommend polyaspartic with a flake broadcast for the best balance of speed, durability and aesthetics. For heavy industrial use, epoxy is the way to go.
